Thermal springs were discovered in the area in the mid 19th century. In 1909, Szczawnica was acquired by Adam Stadnicki of Nawojowa. The luxurious ‘Willa Pod Modrzewiami’ (’Villa under the Larches’) was built in 1938 for his daughter Maria and her husband Stefan Swieżawski. During World War II it was a shelter for countless Polish aristocrats then after the war the communist authorities nationalised the spa and it was used to treat occupational diseases.
In 2001 heirs of Count Adam Stadnicki filed a petition to annul the nationalisation and in 2005 the Polish government returned the resort to its rightful ownership who set about restoring the former splendour and charm to Szczawnica. Today the spa resort includes a Wellness centre, swimming pool and business space.
